Chapter 9

Chevy

Chevy had done a lot of bold things in her life, namely traveling the world solo. But what felt like an even bigger deal was telling Tucker what had happened to Enrique...and that she’d never been kissed. The words were out of her mouth before she could stop them.

Could she shove them back in? Nope.

Could she run back to Egret Avenue and pretend the whole thing hadn’t happened? Yup.

But she didn’t.

The way the breeze blew softly against her skin, the warm summer air, and the sun shining overhead kept her rooted there. And Tucker’s eyes. They were curious, a bit wide with surprise by her confession, and definitely interested. Never had a guy’s gaze made her feel so...at home. Maybe home wasn’t just a location, but a feeling...

A feeling shared with someone else.

Because of someone else.

Enhanced by someone else.

Chevy had been searching for a place to live, to call home. Perhaps she’d found it...and him.

Tucker’s gaze lingered on her, sending a flutter of sensation through her body.

Her skin hummed, lit up by the sunshine and spark in his eyes.

His fingers grazed her arm, exciting the flutters and the hum. He inclined his head and his lips parted.

Chevy lifted onto her toes. She was drawn to him.

Would he give her kissing lessons in addition to driving lessons? She was about to find out.

He was close enough she could see a few freckles on his nose, make out the flecks of silver in his eyes, and get lost in the contours of his lips.

Just then a dog barked, running headlong between them. Chevy jumped back as a seagull took flight.

Tucker pressed his hand against his chest as though he’d almost had a heart attack. “These dogs are rascals.”

Chevy had to catch her breath. Her own pulse was going a mile a minute and not only because she’d been startled. If she could rewind the last sixty seconds, she was quite sure she’d have witnessed an almost-kiss.

“I should get going,” she said. “I think these guys have had enough playtime. And I have to start posting signs for the car show and a missing dog.”

“Yeah.” Tucker raked his hand through his hair. “I should head back to work.”

The kind of quiet that suggested they were both processing what had almost happened laced between them as they walked up Main Street.

What could be said about it anyway?

Hey, we almost kissed.

Or that almost-kiss was something, huh?

Or I really enjoyed almost kissing you. We should try again sometime.

A little smile lifted the corners of Chevy’s lips. She bit back the words and was lost in how right it felt, how full, how perfect it had been as they’d moved closer together.

When they reached the garage, Tucker tipped his cowboy hat.

Still holding the leashes, she awkwardly waved. “See you at home.”

That was not what she meant to say. Or was it? Probably better than all that stuff about kissing, but it confirmed what she’d been feeling...Blue Bay Beach and Tucker might be what she’d been searching for.
